Please join us for our first open community meeting on May 18th at 6:00 PM in the St. George Town Office.

As you may know, we are in the process of forming a non-profit Community Development Corporation for St. George.  We are holding an open community meeting to introduce the idea and take questions and suggestions from the community at large.  Please save the date, Thursday, May 18, 6:00, for this event.  And, while you are at it, please share this with your friends and neighbors.

If you are not aware of this initiative, the St. George Community Development Corporation’s mission is to help improve the community of St. George for the benefit of all residents. We hope to lead and fund innovative projects that enhance the community’s resiliency, supporting economic development and workforce housing, expanding educational opportunities, and increasing access to healthcare.

This began as a response to economic forces that are hardly unique to St. George.  There are several challenges facing us in preserving a sustainable local community—a dearth of local jobs, a lack of workforce housing, and disappearing local businesses—all of which need to be addressed over time.  We believe that a local non-profit entity—a St. George Community Development Corporation—can work with interested people and organizations to help address some of these issues.  As a non-profit, it will benefit from the generous philanthropy of both our summer and year-round community, and use that and other public and private resources to help strengthen and preserve local institutions, partnering with the town, the St. George School, our Fire and Ambulance Association, the Library, and other community organizations.  This has been done by some of the island communities in Maine with success, and we believe this can work for St. George.
